The Amazing Race, Episode 3: King Arthur Style

Recap: The Amazing Race, Episode 3: King Arthur Style

Nine teams start out in a mountain retreat in Chile and must fly to Lisbon, Portugal. The first team to depart is Touchdown who depart around 6:30 p.m., followed close behind by the Cousins, the Beardos and the Doctors.

This episode of The Amazing Race is all about scrambling to find a better flight. The Cousins go straight to the airport and find an itinerary that gets them in at 11 a.m., while the other teams go to a travel agent and…chaos. The Doctors are getting in at 7 a.m., but Touchdown can’t get on the same flight because their travel agent was booking them a flight on the wrong date. Instead, Touchdown takes a risk and gets on a flight that has two connections and arrives in Lisbon at 7 a.m.

The Cousins help out the LaLas and tell them about their itinerary that gets in to Lisbon at 11 a.m. Then, in a bit of strategic weirdness, the Cousins let the Oil Riggers in on it as well so that there will be more teams scrambling for the finish line in case their flight gets screwed up. Somehow, the Oil Riggers and the Beardos find a totally different flight that gets in at 10 a.m., and the remainder of the racers get in at noon. Whew! I’m exhausted, and teams have not even left the airport.

So how’d all of that maneuvering work out? Not so good for Team Touchdown, whose flight to Madrid is delayed by four hours. The Golddiggers and the Massholes got on standby for the earlier flight that the Doctors are on and that receives a “you’re dead to me” from I Hate You Too which, whatever. I’d totally risk a whammy curse for a five hour lead. Oh no! Touchdown misses the connecting flight, which is the flight everyone else is on! So now they’re in Sao Paolo headed to London, and then to Lisbon.

The Doctors, the Massholes, and the Golddiggers arrive in Lisbon first and find a painting that is a clue to go to the national coach museum. Detour! Tiles or Miles. For Tiles, teams must assemble a life-sized tile puzzle. For Miles, teams must use an ancient navigation instrument to measure the distance between locations on a giant map. The Doctors and the Massholes team up to do the miles task together while the Golddiggers choose to assemble tiles. The Doctors and the Massholes make quick work of their task, finishing before other teams even land.

The next clue sends teams to a Roadblock! Put on a suit of armor and use an old timey bow and arrow to hit a shield. The Massholes get it on the first try and receive a clue to go to the pit stop at Castelo dos Mourds. But, they take a wrong turn and let the Doctors catch up and check in as Team Number One (with an amazing view of Lisbon in the background). The Massholes check in as Team Number Two, with the Golddiggers as Team Number Three.

Next to arrive in Lisbon are the Oil Riggers and the Beardos. Some time later, the Cousins and the LaLas arrive with the other teams trailing behind. Speaking of trailing behind, Team Touchdown’s flight is delayed in Madrid. They just cannot catch a break.

Both the Oil Riggers and the Beardos blaze through their tasks while the Cousins and the LaLas are both too dimwitted to figure out the meaning of “nautical miles” and switch to the tile task. The Oil Riggers check in as Team Number Four, with the Beardos as Team Number Five. Next to check in are the Cousins and the LaLas, followed close behind by I Hate You Too.

Which means Team Touchdown are the last team to arrive. Awkward, Phil meets them at the airport. “Uh oh, that’s not good. I’m not really happy to see you right now Phil, I gotta be honest with you.”  Wow. Team Touchdown went from first place to getting eliminated from the race before they even set foot outside of the airport. “You’re at an airport so it might be easy for you to get out of here.” Ouch, Phil. Ouch.

Next week, Nicole tries to trade information for an Express Pass.
