It’s the reunion show, hosted by Zanna Roberts Rassi, Senior Fashion Editor of Marie Claire, with the winner and the whiner and everything in-between. Zanna gets right down to it with “Let’s talk about the teams twist this season,” which is met with nervous laughter from everyone except for Daniel, who was carried through the competition on the backs of his teammates. Blondie and Samantha express their distaste for teams, to the point where they may not have done the show had they known about the twist because it makes it impossible to get their point of view across.
We get a montage of teams that didn’t work, and oh boy. We get to watch Polka Dots saying that she didn’t want to work with Wind Chime but Wind Chime is right there! Polka Dots awkwardly talks her way around it, but we all know. Amanda also realizes that Kate doesn’t respect her work, and why is Kate wearing a tiara? You have not earned a tiara! And is that a wedding dress? Yikes. Amanda replies with a perfectly bitchy “I feel bad for you…I just feel really bad because that must be so hard for you to watch.” Then, to add a cherry to top of that frozen yogurt, Zanna calls Kate immature. Meeeow!
Things I noticed:
- Richard and Layana. They genuinely do not like each other.
- TuTu looks nauseous through the entire reunion show, like he is struggling to keep up with the words floating around his head.
- Daniel may be on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and that’s sad because he seems like a nice person who was just never meant to be in such a stressful environment.
- Samantha looks like she has something to say but isn’t getting asked the right questions.
The hostess notes that this season more than others, everyone was sweetness and light in the workroom, and then ripping each other to shreds during the interviews. We hear things like, “Ninety-percent of what she designs and does is crap,” “Love me some Richard, but when it comes to wovens, he’s kind of challenged,” and “Michelle, Layana, and Amanda are bitches.” And how many times did Amanda get tossed under that bus? Hallmarq, Daniel, Wind Chime, the parade of Amanda-bashing was endless.
Let’s talk about “The Blunder from Down Under,” where the runway turned into the worst striptease on the planet thanks to the Aussie answer to the Chippendales men. Apparently their bodies were the wrong shape, inasmuch as they were not the shape of a praying mantis. Oh, and we learn that the workday is much shorter than it seems. When Tim Gunn says, “You have one day to complete this challenge,” it is really only about seven hours because of the interviews, filming issues, and eating. So while the day starts super early, it’s not wall-to-wall sewing. This stressful schedule leads to epic meltdowns, including, “A person like you, Michelle, you can’t bring me down because I’m a happy person no matter what, and these are tears of happiness,” and, “Oh no no no, we don’t want it to be gaudy,” (pronounced “gaw-dee” by Michelle, a true New Yawkuh).
It’s time for the winner’s montage (but if you ask me, Stanley’s badass black and yellow face-doodle tent dress steals the show). Polka Dots explains that when everybody jetted off to Europe, she almost quit. But TuTu talked her out of leaving, so good for him. Did you know that Wind Chime never won a challenge? Huh. And Stanley totally regrets not being prepared for the finale. That hindsight sure is twenty-twenty.
So how were the judges this season? Samantha thought that Zac Posen Kors got her aesthetic, which is surprising since his design sense is so different. Nina bonded Stanley, who designs for Nina’s demographic. Polka Dots didn’t think that anybody liked her, which is a weird thing to say because she won. And then there’s Wind Chime, who seems oblivious to Nina Garcia’s disgust for her designs. And then there’s Tim Gunn, who says fun things like “wackadoodle” and “lackluster.” Turns out it was Tim who pushed the judges off-camera to keep Polka Dots on the show, so someone owes Papa Gunn a huge hug.
And that’s it. There were no fistfights or hair pulling, and Daniel only cried once. Thanks for joining us for this season of Project Runway!
