The Amazing Race All-Stars, Episode 2

Recap: The Amazing Race All-Stars, Episode 2

So did everyone forgo watching that little awards ceremony to follow The Amazing Race through one town in China? Yeah, me too. The least they could’ve done was, oh, I don’t know, go somewhere! Or do something! It was a geographically boring episode, but there were a few interesting tactical maneuvers. Instead of following our intrepid travelers from one task to another, let’s take a break and focus on what happens when you really mess things up.104307_d02149

1. Mistake No. 1: The Cowboys

They’re usually so careful, which is why I was surprised that they screwed things up right out of the gate. They had to make their way from the pit stop to the next clue, and asked a local for directions. He pointed them in the right direction, but when the Cowboys asked how far, he held up five fingers. The Cowboys took that to mean five minutes, but the local really meant fifty minutes. He tried to impress upon them how far it was with hand gestures, but the Cowboys were already off and running. Mistake. Huge mistake. Big, giant, Texas-sized mistake.

After running for what was nearly an hour and all of the other teams having already arrived at the Roadblock, the Cowboys gave up on their morning jog and hailed a cab. This put them in last place, and if it wasn’t for their incredible Roadblock skills, they would’ve been eliminated. Instead, they moved from first to the middle of the pack.

2. Mistake No. 2: Mark and Mallory

The Amazing Race Recap

These two just don’t know each other, and that’s a problem. You need to know your partner and have clearly defined roles. Apparently Mallory’s role was supposed to be The Keeper Of The Backpacks, but she blew it. She left Mark’s backpack at the Roadblock. Oops? But they had all of their passports and seasick meds in Mallory’s backpack, so it only meant that Mark would be without clothes and maybe a toothbrush for the remainder of the race. No biggie, right? Wrong. He insisted that they return for the bag even though it would clearly put them in last place pretty far into this leg of the race. They retrieved the bag, but were eliminated from the race. Congrats, Mark. You got your stuff back. I don’t know. He didn’t seem into running the race with Mallory which, yeah. I totally get that. But once you’re in it, how about giving it your all?

3. Mistake No. 3: My Family Is Famous

The Amazing Race All Stars Recap

This wasn’t so much of a mistake as it was very telling as to why this team has no shot in hell of winning The Amazing Race. The duo arrived at the Roadblock in next-to-last place (with only the Cowboys behind them), and instead of diving in and banging through the challenge, which was to assemble a motorized toy car, they cried girl. I can’t do it because I’m a girl! Cars are for boys! This is unfair! Math is hard! So instead of trying, they worked the Cowboys for their extra Express Pass. The strategy worked in the short-term (as soon as they were out of danger themselves, the Cowboys were happy to give it away to someone who was going to burn it early in the race), but it’s not a long-term goal for winning the million bucks.

Anyway, the remaining teams will hopefully get on an airplane next week so that we can get this thing underway. Go team!
