The Amazing Race, Episode 2: Zip It, Bingo

The Amazing Race Episode 2 Biking

The teams start out this leg of the race in Iquique, Chile with Team I Hate You Too leaving the pit stop with two Express Passes in their grubby paws at 2:52 a.m.. They receive a clue to go to the deck of a ship where their next clue will be posted. Of course the ship is closed and won’t open until 7:15 a.m.  While the other teams trickle in, I Hate You Too tries to make a line, behind her. Yeah. That’s not going to work so good. When the dock opens, it’s a whole lot of pushing and shoving to find a famous phrase that must be repeated to the officer in Spanish. The Beardos get it right first and take off for the salt mines with the LaLas close behind, and everyone else in a big old pack.

Detour! Ride bikes into the salt flat and choose between mining or brining. With brining, teams must add enough salt into a pool of water so that they can float while reading a newspaper. Mining involves breaking open boulders of salt until a clue is found. The Beardos decide to smash rocks along with the LaLas, the Cousins, and Touchdown. The Massholes and the Doctors opt for a relaxing salt bath, but Mrs. Doctor is having problems with her bicycle and falls off which is totally understandable because she’s tired, they’re very slightly above sea level, and it’s a long bike ride on uneven terrain. (I recently had a bad experience during a leisurely bicycle ride through Paris…did you know that the Champs-Élysées is built on a very slight incline? It was uphill, both ways.) Eventually the LaLas have some trouble with the whole smashing of the rocks thing and switch tasks just as I Hate You Too and Liquid Gold arrive at the brining task.

The Beardos find their clue first and are sent back into the city so that they can take a 1,000-mile bus ride to Santiago, Chile and search for their next clue in a plaza. The Cousins finish next and pass Jazz Hands who are first arriving (their taxi driver got very lost). Next out of the Detour are Touchdown, the Massholes, and the Doctors. Eventually the Golddiggers are the only ones left at the salt baths while Jazz Hands find their clue in the salt mines.

The Amazing Race Episode 2 Salt Bath

At the bus station, Jazz Hands makes a bold move and finds another bus that leaves two hours later but makes less stops so it arrives in Santiago two hours earlier….except that’s not what the people at the ticket booth actually said, and now they’re arriving in Santiago several hours later than the second bus. Oopsie?

The first bus with five teams arrives and the teams rush to a clue box in the Plaza de Armas. Roadblock! One team member must shine a customer’s shoes at a shoeshine cart, figure out how to put the cart back together, and push it six blocks to the depot to receive their next clue. Touchdown finishes first and receives a clue to go to the Cascada de las Animas, which is a nature reserve in the Andes Mountains. The Cousins are close behind followed by Beardos, the Doctors, and the Massholes.

The Cousins’ taxi speeds ahead of Touchdown and they check in as Team Number One, but they fail to settle up with their cab so Phil can’t check them in just yet. This allows Touchdown to hit the matt as Team Number One. Cousins are second, Beardo is third, the Doctors are fourth, and the Massholes are fifth.

During the bus ride, I Hate You Too and the Golddiggers bond because all four are fairly awful people. When they arrive at the plaza, Jazz Hands magically catches up to the second bus! Go Jazz Hands! The teams are having some trouble with their kits. Specifically, I Hate You Too and Golddiggers are having some trouble with their kits. Also, what on earth did Jazz Hands do? He just cajoled a random shoeshine man to bring his kit to the depot, and it’s all sorts of wrong. Like, that’s not even a designated Amazing Race Shoeshine Kit.

Team Liquid Gold check in as Team Number Six and the LaLas are Team Number Seven. Luckily for Jazz Hands the Golddiggers forget one piece from their kit and has to go back to search for it in the plaza. She finds it before Jazz Hands gets his entire kit back to the depot and receives the clue with what looks like a few minutes’ lead.

I Hate You Too check in as Team Number Eight the Golddiggers check in as Team Number Nine, which leaves Jazz Hands as the last team to arrive. They are eliminated from the race. Bummer.

Next week, Golddigger jumps in front of I Hate You Too at the airport, and there goes that friendship.
